Subject: Magnetic Billiards: Seriously Casual
This is a neat little concept sketch I did early on in the development of Magnetic Billiards.
We were trying to come up with idea of how to reward the player for making certain clusters of balls on the table, and at the same time explain to the player exactly what they'd done to earn the reward.
This was our very first idea - to have blueprints unfold on the screen showing a diagram of the cluster layout the player had made - but it wasn't a very good idea. We'd just come off our original blueprint prototype (where we made the initial version of the game with only blueprint style graphics, to keep us focused on raw game mechanics at the early stages), and I think we just like the blueprint look, even though it wasn't especially appropriate for the visual style we adopted.
We continued talking about the idea, and eventually came up with the playing cards which are given as a reward for making certain cluster shapes, and can be 'played' at any time in the game to give the player a boost.
The final playing card designs (see follow up picture link above) incorporate a little flavour of the blueprint idea shown here.
