Subject: Cosmic Pirate
This is one of a series of concept art drawings I did for our game Cosmic Pirate, which I think was the first game we had published as Zippo Games, the indie dev studio John and I formed in 1988 (or was it 1987?), with Steve Hughes and Jim Baguley from Binary Design.
I think we started with three projects Amiga / ST project - one for John to program (Cosmic Pirate), one for Steve called Road Hugg (canned about half way through), and one for Jim (Cluster, for Psygnosis, again canned half way through). I was to be the artist on all three, although we took on a second artist, the excellent Lyndon Brooke, before too long.
I think this art was done during development rather than at the initial design stage (so not really concept art), perhaps intended as artwork for the manual. My hot thing at this time was letratone. I loved that stuff. It must be hard for the Photoshop generation to believe that we actually manually cut out bits of sticky plastic with a scalpel, and stuck it onto our paper drawings, to get the halftone grey you can see on the body of the Guppy Gunna (one of the enemy spaceships in the game) seen above.
