Subject: Wizards & Warriors 3
This is a concept drawing for Silversword (Wizards and Warriors 3), our NES game from 1989 or so.
This guys is the Guild Keeper of the Wizards Guild. Brilliant, eh? Designing this game was like a dream come true at the time, as I'd always wanted to make a game with wizards and thieves and guilds and secret tunnels and hidden towers. We got to stick everything like that into the design. In some ways it was a bit of a homage to the Ultimate games I grew up playing, and we were making it for the very same people! That kind of made up for the peanuts they were paying us.
I was (and still am) really pleased with this drawing. It's dead simple, but has a lovely, elegant shape, and it translated perfectly to a tiny pixel sprite on the NES (I think Lyndon Brooke - the other artist on the game - did this sprite). It's easy to do concept art that looks great on paper bit not so good when implemented. Much harder to do a nice drawing that also makes a nice in game graphics. Especially when its for the NES!
