This is the second of the 'Dates' comic strips I did with my friend Paul a couple of years back (click the link underneath the strip to see the first one).
This was intended to be a series of comic strips, written by and starring Paul, and drawn by me, and I was hoping they'd get me back into drawing comics regularly. I'd had a long break from drawing and was very rusty. Unfortunately we only finished two pages (for the reasons given with the first strip), and I don't think I did a very good job of either.
As well as not drawing any comics for ages, I was also trying to learn to ink with a brush, which I found much harder than using a pen. I was really pleased with the first panel of this strip (although it took me ages!), but I think the rest look a bit amateurish as I'm obviously a bit cack handed with the brush.
Also, I don't think I captured the rhythm of Paul's writing correctly in the drawings. Paul has drawn a lot of comics himself and has a really distinctive style, which I realise now is partly from the way he paces each panel. It works really well when he draws them, but I think it's partly because he doesn't change much from panel to panel, so the time and the rhythm is much clearer. I tend to change views from panel to panel - partly just to give myself something interesting to draw - but that doesn't always suit the way Paul writes.
Also at this point I hadn't actually seen Paul for a year or so - we'd just talked on email - so the character in the drawings looks nothing like him!
I think if I'd knuckled down and drawn about 10 or 12 pages, they would have started getting really good towards the end, then we could have hidden the first couple of duff pages in between some good ones!
