Subject: Magnetic Billiards: Blueprint
I woke up this morning to the news that Magnetic Billiards: Blueprint has been nominated for a BAFTA Video Game Award in the Mobile & Handheld category.
Blimey!
We're listed next to Quarrel and Peggle, and some game I've never heard of called 'Mario Super' by plucky little indie studio Nintendo.
Regular readers will remember me having a big old moan about the way the BAFTAs for video games are organised late last year, which was followed up by my being invited to meet some of the BAFTA organisers in January. We were also strongly encouraged to enter our game, which we finally did after being told it had received 'committee recommendation'.
The meeting with the BAFTA people went well, and even though I stand by my criticisms of the awards as they are currently set up (which I think is massively biased towards big budget AAA games, and is essentially rewarding budget rather than talent), I got the impression that BAFTA are aware of some of the problems, and are honestly want to improve the awards and make them more relevant to game developement, rather than let them continue as just part of the big publisher marketing machine.
It's still a genuine surprise that our little game made it through to the long list, and now to the nomination stage, rubbing shoulders with games by Nintendo and Electronic Arts.
I can't see us beating Mario (or Quarrel for that matter), but it's nice to get a bit of recognition, and it proves that you don't always need big budgets and flashy graphics to make a good game.
