I wanted a look something like the poster for "Dead Man’s Shoes" for the main figure in this illustration (without being too close), but couldn’t find any reference that was exactly right. There are a lot of different types of gas mask out there! In the end I took about five different photos and chopped different bits out of them (the eyes, the shirt, the breathing tube, etc.) and made a collage in Photoshop of the sort of figure I wanted, then distorted this composite photo I’d made, and only then used it as reference for the drawing. I probably spent way more time hunting down and combining and messing about with the various photo reference pieces than I did on the drawing itself, which only took a couple of hours.
I regret inking in horizontal cross hatching lines on the brick wall in the background. I think it looks a bit amateurish, whereas the vertical-lines-only shading in the pencil version works just fine. In fact, the smoke trails look much better in the pencil version as well - they’ve lost something with the cleaner ink lines.
