Vol 2 cover - background 2

Now the background texture has the inks and basic colour added over the top.

The colours for the characters and rocks are just painted in as a layer of flat colour, above the background texture layer but below the inks layer.

The brown colour for the crater and 'disturbed' earth was done a bit differently. For this I painted into an 'hue/saturation' adjustment layer over the top of background, where I altered the hue value to make the green into a orangey-brown. This changed the colour of the underlying texture, but didn't alter the gradient and texture effects, which still show through.

The crater was painted in solid on this hue adjustment layer, but for the disturbed earth I wanted a gradient running from the new brown colour into the original green, to make the tracks look like they're dug into the ground. This was *really* fiddly and meant creating a unique mask for each section of disturbed earth running up to each rock, then drawing a gradient inside this mask, on the adjustment layer, from white to black, pointing towards the crater.

This took longer than any other part of the process, and probably wasn't worth the effort.
